Based on the 19865 novel of the same title by Angeles Mastretta, Roberto Snider’s film is set during the period of Mexico’s post-revolution of the ’30s and ’40s. The story begins with the beautiful Catalina Guzman (Ana Claudia Talancon) marrying at an early age to the much older charismatic and cunning general, Andres Ascencio (Daniel Gimenez Cacho). Dazzled by his world, Catalina escorts him on his political campaigns, perceiving at his side the intriguing political system to obtain social justice. She soon discovers, however, that by having dedicated her life to Andres, she will lose her freedom. Tear This Heart Out is considered one of the most widely acclaimed and expensive films in the history of Mexican cinema.
