The Brooklyn-based band Las Rubias del Norte is a unique band of American musicians (hence the name) playing Latin American music. Having recently released their latest album, Ziguala, Las Rubias are now in Chicago’s Morseland, to give the city a taste of the enthralling sound that has got them fans all around the country.
It all started when rubias Allyssa Lamb and Emily Hurst decided to quit their classical choir and start a group of their own, which soon veered off its classical course, and started incorporating boleros, Cuban guajiras and cowboy songs. The result played like a dreamy soundtrack with classical harmonies set to a Latin beat. After a two-year hiatus, the Blondes of the North are back and with material covering a wider range than usual. Their new songs run from an intimate Neapolitan ballad to a Bollywood production, a Kurt Weill song in French and a classic chicha. While the dynamic range and the geographic scope are wider than ever, Las Rubias do keep the Pan-Latin spirit alive by treating it all like it was recorded in Veracruz in 1961.
