In Mariposa Negra, a Peruvian film directed by Julio Lombardi, a school teacher and journalist attempt to avenge the politically motivated murder in this thriller. Murder victim Guido Pazos was an honest judge, so when his girlfriend Gabriela learns that Angelina, a local reporter, was forced to spin his death as a gay romance gone wrong, confrontation is inevitable. Together, the women will delve deep into the mystery as Alberto Fujimori’s dictatorship falters on its last legs.
Mariposa Negra is part of the 26th Chicago Latino Film Festival, which aims to challenge oversimplified standardized images of Latino identity through visual cultural expressions. Every April, over 35,000 audience members from all walks of life enjoy this cross-cultural educational encounter: special events, film screenings and workshops held in theaters and other venues, including colleges, universities and community base organizations.
